How You See God

How You See God

January 3, 2023 Posted by David Blackstone

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” – Hebrews 13:8

At a recent eye exam, my friend John learned his vision had worsened and he needed a new pair of prescription glasses. His optometrist’s office called a week later to tell him that the glasses were ready.

When John first put on the glasses, the world around him looked blurry. But he figured since he hadn’t updated his prescription in a few years that he simply needed to get use to the new lenses.

But the blurriness didn’t go away. Now, John felt dizzy and bumped into things. He even had trouble parking his car one night and hit a mailbox, leaving a long scratch on his car door. That’s when his wife urged him to make another appointment with his optometrist.

At the second appointment, John’s doctor checked the prescription. He quickly realized that someone on staff had accidentally switched John’s lenses with another patient’s glasses. This was the cause of John’s accident and his visual problems.

It wasn’t that the world around John had changed. Rather, the problem was John couldn’t see clearly, he was seeing through the lens of his circumstance. This can happen to us, too. An illness, job loss, or tragedy can make you think that God has changed or moved. But while your circumstances might shift, God never changes and never abandons His children.

James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”  No Variation! None, He watches us go through our day, each day, watching us get tossed around emotionally from one circumstance to the next yet He is our anchor, He is our standard.  He is not a lens, He is the Reality.  And His Word will come to pass, God is not a man that He should lie the Bible says. But even more than words spoken, Gods words are written down and recorded in Heaven.

Forever,O LORD, you word is firmly fixed in the heavens.” – Psalm 119:89. Imagine that moment when John got the right lenses and went from a life of blurry, confused and clumsy to one of calculated and precise clarity.  This is the stability God offers us if we put our trust in Him and ask Him to not only open our eyes but Guide us by His perfect will.

God, help me to see You clearly. I want to know Your heart and follow You, even when I can’t see what’s around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen
